Before founding Strategic Action in 1984, Jim was Director of Planning of DiGiorgio Corporation, a $1 billion conglomerate in San Francisco. He helped the company's ten food processing, building materials, and distribution businesses to out-innovate their competition. Growth, acquisitions and strategic cost reduction increased the price of DiGiorgio's stock from $7.00 to over $30.00 a share. Prior to joining DiGiorgio in 1979, he was Director of Planning of Systron-Donner (a high tech conglomerate), Senior Planner with Kaiser Industries, a Management Consultant with Stone & Webster, and held various engineering positions at Becton-Dickinson. These included R&D, design of medical products, design and start-up of automated manufacturing processes, manufacturing engineering, and a promotion to New Products Coordinator. At B-D, he was awarded two patents and was published in Clinical Chemistry magazine for a discovery in fluorometric chemistry.

Jim has an MBA from NYU, an MS in management science/industrial engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology, and a BE in chemical engineering from Villanova University. He has been a guest lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, and delivers courses in the executive and management education programs of the University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota Carlson School of Business, and other universities. A Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Jim is frequently asked to speak at corporate events, trade and professional association meetings, and conferences.
